The Emirates Film Competition is an official UAE competition targeted to encourage local film making and film production, this competition includes all short-movie categories such as: narrative/fiction, docs and animation amongst others. The competition is divided into two parts: students and general; this is to give UAE students from schools, colleges and universities a chance to screen their films and have them compete for valuable prizes. At the outskirts of this competition, you will find a number of film-showings of Arab and international movies, together with lectures and specialised seminars.
The Competition was established by Mohamed Al-Mazrouei (UAE writer), Masoud Amarallah Al-Ali, and Ali Al-Jabri. The current Director of the Competition is Abdalla Bastaki. The Emirates Film Competition is sponsored by Abu Dhabi Media Company, Sorouh Real Estate, UAE Ministry of Youth & Culture, and is organised by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage.
This year (2008) the film competition has bundled itself with an Emirates Film Grant to support its local filmmakers to produce feature length films. Amongst the rules of the competition it is stated that the writer or the producer can be non UAE nationals, though the pitch is only applicable to nationals. The film must be produced by October 1, 2008. Moreover, the deadline of entering a film into the Emirates Film Grant is February the 7th. Emirates Film Competition's current director is Abdallah Bastaki. Masoud Amrallah (Ex- EFC director) was hired recently as Dubai Film Festiva's Artistic Director and has his own awards section there known as "The Muhr" Awards for Arab Excellence in Cinema.
